Two measures at once
Each area is colored by where it falls on two measures you choose: blue grows with the horizontal one, magenta with the vertical one, and the dark plum corner is high on both.
- Pick the two measures at the top left: one goes across (blue), one goes up (magenta). Click either to choose from 25: how many young people live there, their poverty, work and schooling, arrests, violence and the summer jobs sites within a mile.
- Or start from a ready-made comparison, such as youth poverty against how many summer jobs program sites are nearby.
- Hover a legend square to see only the areas in it. Click an area for all of its numbers.
- The map opens on police precincts, where every arrest, shooting and violent crime counts. Switch to neighborhoods for finer areas; there, the records NYPD logs at a precinct station house are left out because their street location is unknown.
Arrests and shootings are counted where they happened, not where young people live. The methodology page explains every measure and its limits.
